Background and experience

Alison has been a Speech Pathologist since 1988. She first worked in schools across the western suburbs, then for Yooralla’s technology centre, and then as a Clinical Senior in Autism and Learning Difficulties at a London hospital.

In 2000 she set up a part-time private practice in Footscray, while continuing to work in specialist and mainstream schools, for SCOPE, at the Royal Children’s Hospital, with preschoolers with hearing impairments and for a language assessment service. She moved her practice to Clifton Hill in 2012 and now works there full-time.

Alison set up and maintains the website at www.spelfabet.com.au to help promote the teaching of explicit, systematic, synthetic phonics. She has Sounds-write and Phonographix certification, and draws on these and a range of other programs as well as her own materials in providing therapy for clients with learning difficulties.

Alison presents workshops on identifying and helping learners who are struggling with spelling and reading, including those with diagnoses of dyslexia and/or dysgraphia. In 2017 she will also be offering spelling groups.

As well as her Speech Pathology degree, Alison has a Masters in Applied Linguistics and a Cambridge CTEFLA ESL-teaching qualification. She speaks a little Spanish and is a past Vice-President of Learning Difficulties Australia. She has also worked as an ESL teacher at RMIT and in Mexico, as an administrator, and has been a local Councillor and Mayor.
